'The Tomorrow People' (a.k.a. Origin Story) (5 Parts) by Roger Damon Price |
Teenager Adam Newman finds himself washed up on a tropical beach, where he discovers an ancient alien spaceship buried under the sand. In London, schoolboy Kevin Wilson has been experiencing strange dreams of a girl named Lisa swimming at sea; that night Kevin stays over at his friend Megabyte’s house, where they conduct an experiment into Kevin’s mind-reading ability using a pack of playing cards. In America, Lisa Davis is forced to enter a talent contest by her overbearing mother; however, faced with the crowd of expectant onlookers in the school hall, Lisa panics and vanishes into thin air, reappearing in the sea just off the shore of a tropical island. Sensing Lisa’s distress Kevin reflexively teleports to her location, but his inability to swim results in Lisa hauling him to shore; believing that they are both dreaming, Kevin teleports back to Megabyte’s, but Lisa decides to stay and explore the island. Back in the U.S., Professor Galt of the British Scientific Intelligence Service joins Colonel Masters of the U.S. Intelligence Agency, two paramilitary organisations investigating Lisa’s disappearance, which was recorded on video at the contest. Lisa comes across the spaceship and meets Adam inside; he tells her that the ship is thousands of years old, and acts as a beacon to attract people like them: the Tomorrow People, the next stage of human evolution. The next morning Kevin and Megabyte head for school by bus, but are forced to return home after an incident with a couple of bullies; seeing a television news report showing Lisa’s vanishing act, the two boys decide to travel to the U.S to find her. Megabyte’s father is currently away on business, so they use his frequent flyer airmails to book two airplane tickets; however, Kevin doesn’t have a passport, and is forced to dress up in drag to pose as Megabyte’s sister. Back at the school hall, Professor Galt sets a trap for Lisa’s possible return using energy beams; Kevin and Megabyte arrive in a cab, just as Lisa teleports back on stage – and straight into the energy field; as she writhes in agony Megabyte smashes the machinery with a chair and orders Kevin and Lisa to teleport to safety. The two Tomorrow People promptly dematerialise, but Megabyte is taken prisoner by the authorities and subjected to interrogation. Lisa rejoins Adam at the island, where they determine that the government wants to use their special powers for spying. Kevin teleports back to the bus, which is now locked up in a depot; after being discovered by an overzealous security guard, Kevin scrambles onto the roof of the vehicle, but the man takes the bus on a harrowing drive through the streets of London which is only stopped by the intervention of two policemen. After Kevin teleports away, he is pulled out of the sea by Adam and Lisa and taken to the spaceship. Galt takes Megabyte back to London, smuggling the boy through customs in the suitcase of his formidable henchwoman, Gloria; meanwhile, Masters reports to his superior, General Damon of the Teleporter Investigation Alliance, and then to the influential but madly-eccentric Lady Mulvaney, who wants the Tomorrow People for her own gains. Adam, Lisa and Kevin search the school hall for their missing friend, and only just escape the clutches of the Colonel’s men. After asking for a toilet break at the Hard Rock Café, Megabyte gives Galt and Gloria the slip, and then is reunited with his father – General Damon. Leaving Kevin back at the ship, Adam accompanies Lisa as she returns home to her mother; however, their apartment is now under surveillance by Colonel Masters’ men, who shoot them with stun guns – while Adam and Mrs Davis are taken prisoner, Lisa slips into unconsciousness and reflexively teleports into the ocean depths…
