27th September 1956: Sam leaps into Greek sailor Nikos Stathatos, treading water in a storm-tossed sea just as his boat explodes. Finding a beautiful girl clinging to a trunk, Sam keeps them both afloat until they reach a passing dinghy; however, Sam’s companion, Vanessa Foster, turns out to be a bossy, spoiled rich girl who treats Nikos with contempt. Al informs Sam that Vanessa was due to be reunited with her fiancé, David, who is still alive on a raft with the captain, and due to be rescued in three hours; however, somehow history has changed, and now Vanessa and Nikos never get found. Sam and Vanessa continue to argue, especially when Sam learns that Vanessa blew up the ship while having a cigarette. With their chances of survival plummeting, Sam uses Vanessa’s wedding dress as a sail, and their dinghy soon washes up on the beach of a remote island. Al reappears with the news that history has changed again: now the castaways won’t be rescued for another nine years – assuming they haven’t killed each other by then…
