Hawk has decided to join the crew of the Searcher on their mission to locate the lost tribes of Earth. He, Buck and Wilma are instructed by Doctor Goodfellow to escort Zykarian Ambassador Duvoe to an important peace conference on the planet Oasis; Duvoe was once romantically involved with Wilma, and he soon begins to compete with Buck for her attentions. The four of them leave for Oasis in a shuttle, but while en route to the meeting, they encounter a violent storm and are forced to crash land on the desert planet of R-4. As Buck, Wilma, Hawk and Duvoe search for a way off the arid world, they meet a mischievous impish creature called O-Dee-X - short for Ocular Dynamics Experiment - who tells them that R-4 is a depository for failed genetic experiments. In order to leave the planet, Buck and his companions must journey to the Cave of the Winds and face Ezer Hardin, a mysterious being that is otherwise known as the Sword of Death. Along the way they must avoid the fearsome creatures that inhabit the planet, including the primitive mutants known as Atavars. Meanwhile, aboard Duvoe’s ship, Admiral Zeit becomes convinced that the Zykarian Ambassador has been kidnapped, and he prepares to mount an attack on the Searcher in retalliation…
