When Buck, Hawk and Wilma explore Vordeeth, the mysterious world also known as the Planet of Death, they come across the wreckage of a derelict space ship. Inside they find the sole survivor, the ship’s pilot; while Wilma takes the man, Riordan, back to the Searcher, Buck and Hawk remain behind to explore an abandoned village. But as they look around they both momentarily disappear, and when they then return to the Searcher, they find that the entire crew is now behaving completely out of character. After Buck, Wilma and Hawk are arrested by Admiral Asimov, they learn that they are actually on board a similacron of their ship - as part of a test by a strange alien being known as the Hand of the Gorral…
