Entering an asteroid field, the Searcher discovers an escape capsule containing a golden-skinned boy named Vellis. When the ship collides with one of the asteroids, Admiral Asimov becomes trapped beneath a fallen girder, but Vellis uses his power of subatomic oscillation to change the molecular structure of the metal, lightening it enough to free Asimov. The boy informs Buck and the crew of the Searcher that he has insufficient power to free the Searcher, but could achieve the feat with the aid of his son, Relkos. However, Relkos is being held captive on the penal colony of Iris VII by an escaped convict named Loran, who is using the alien’s powers to create large amounts of gold for him. Buck and Hawk set off to rescue Relkos but they soon come up against the prison governor, Graff …
