Buck and Hawk are sent to a space station collect the survivors of the planet Avernis, a world doomed by intense volcanic eruptions. Before they return to the Searcher, Buck rescues a young woman named Astaria from a gang of mask-wearing assailants. Later, as the Searcher heads for a new world on which to relocate its passengers, the ship is attacked by another spacecraft; aboard it is Koldar, Supreme Leader of the Dorians, from the planet Cygnius; Koldar demands that Astaria be turned over to him so that she can be tried for the murder of his son, Chozan. When Buck and the others refuse to comply, Koldar turns his deadly thermal intervention beam on the Searcher in attempt to change their minds…
