“Trust no one.”

Located deep in the depths of the basement of the Hoover Building, the headquarters of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, is the office of an obscure department known as the X-Files, an area of the FBI that is responsible for investigating cases deemed too strange, bizarre or inexplicable for normal procedure. The two agents charged with maintaining this area are Fox ‘Spooky’ Mulder (David Duchovny), a self-confessed UFO-enthusiast and conspiracy theorist, whose sister was apparently abducted by aliens when they were both children; and his assistant, Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), a doctor of medicine whose pragmatic and rational mind provides a useful and objective counterpoint to Mulder’s dogged enthusiasm in believing in anything extraordinary or fanciful, no matter how it manifests itself...

In the course of their inquiries into the unknown and unexplained, Mulder and Scully come into contact with such diverse creatures as vampires, werewolves, telekinetics, time travellers, giant killer flukeworms, liver-eating mutants, shape-changers, demons, and ancient alien spacecraft. Mulder’s unorthodox and sometimes fanatical approach to his work often brings him and Scully into conflict with their boss, Assistant Director Skinner. The two agents’ efforts are further hampered by the ruthless Cigarette Smoking Man, whose agenda includes working for a shadowy group of elite governmental figures, who themselves are embroiled in a complex plot concerning alien colonists, sentient black oil, clones and super soldiers. However, Mulder is aided by the mysterious figures known only as ‘Deep Throat’ and ‘X’, furtive informants working within the government, and the ‘Lone Gunmen’, three paranoid techno-geeks whose knowledge of black ops and classified material is both helpful and disturbing.

Episodes do not always reach a satisfactory conclusion, and, as the series progresses, stories become increasingly more surreal and experimental, whilst the horror element becomes more graphic. The conspiracy storyline twists and turns, confusing and obfuscating the issue with false leads, contradictions and red herrings. Mulder and Scully’s will-they-won’t-they relationship eventually reaches a conclusion, and the fall out from this results in the introduction of two new agents, John Doggett and Monica Reyes, who take on the mantle of the X-Files in Mulder’s absence in the final season.

Even though the original television series finished - the final episode offering an almost-but-not-quite-satisfactory conclusion - it still wasn’t the end, as the show's creator and executive producer Chris Carter resurrected the show in movie form in 2008, with the feature film 'I Want To Believe'. Then, in 2013, IDW Comics began publishing ‘The X-Files’ in comic book form, continuing the adventures of Mulder and Scully in new seasons officially overseen by Chris Carter.

In January 2016 'The X-Files' finally returned to our television screens, in six brand-new episodes that reunited Chris Carter, David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson and Mitch Pileggi. This 'Event Mini-Series' was well-received, with the promise of more to come...
