Thunderbirds are go!

It is the year 2065, when retired astronaut and billionaire industrialist Jeff Tracy has completed the formation of International Rescue, an organisation dedicated to saving the lives of accident victims in need of assistance once conventional rescue attempts have failed. Using the technologically advanced Thunderbirds - fantastic rescue vehicles piloted by his sons Scott, Virgil, Alan, Gordon and John, and designed by scientific genius Brains - Jeff co-ordinates operations from a secret base located on a volcanic island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. The Tracy brothers are assisted in their missions by a number of International Rescue operatives, including British aristocrat Lady Penelope Creighton-Ward, who, aided by her loyal butler, Parker, is always on hand to help with a difficult assignment. As well as dealing with dangerous life-threatening situations, the Tracy family also face the constant threat posed by the evil mastermind known as The Hood, who continually attempts to obtain the secrets of the fantastic Thunderbird craft by any means.

Created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, ‘Thunderbirds’ is an action-packed adventure series showcasing some of the most amazing model work ever seen on television, along with brilliant puppetry, excellent storylines, tense situations and a good dose of humour mixed with some larger-than-life characters. Originally, stories were made as half-hour episodes, but when the channel bosses requested that the show be made into hour-long episodes, were padded out by adding a ‘failed’ rescue attempt, prior to the intervention of International Rescue. Subsequent episodes were developed as longer stories, and quickly proved popular with audiences. Two feature films were made, and the show lasted for thirty-two episodes across two seasons.

‘Thunderbirds’ quickly became a cult classic, and is still reaching new audiences today thanks to constant repeat transmissions and a release on DVD.

The story of 'Thunderbirds' doesn't end there: after a live action feature film was made in 2004 (which we don't talk about it because it was absolutely awful!), 2015 saw the transmission of a brand-new series, 'Thunderbirds Are Go', which combined CGI and live model work to reimagine the show for a whole new audience. FAB!
