After a time, it begins to cause major storms across the planet, which threaten to destroy humanity. When sounds are discovered to actually be the call of the humpback whale - a creature that has been hunted to extinction, Starfleet charge Captain Kirk and his crew with a mission to save mankind. They have only one choice: to travel back in time to the twentieth century, locate a whale, and bring it back to the present in order to reply to the probe.
