While enjoying the delights of the establishment Scotty becomes taken with a pretty dancing girl, and they leave the club together; however, Kirk and McCoy are then shocked to find the engineer in a foggy allyway, clutching a bloody knife and standing over the girl s dead body. When Scotty claims to have no recollection of the murder, McCoy theroises that his recent accident has resulted in a subconscious distrust of women, which has manifested itself in murder. The planet s authoritarian, Mr. Hengist, attempts to arrest Scotty, but Kirk manages to intervene, and convinces the man to allow him to investigate the crime. The captain seeks help from a priestess of an ancient psionic cult; the woman suggests holding a séance, but during the ceremony the woman inexplicably dies, her last words waring that something with an insatiable hunger and a hatred of women is present in the room. Kirk soon discovers that the mysterious killer is Redjac, an ancient alien life-form that once manifested itself on Earth during the Nineteeth Century, committing a series of grisly murders under the name of Jack the Ripper. This non-corporeal vampire lives off of pure fear, preying on women because they are more easily frightened. The Starfleet officers and Hengist realise that the murderous creature has now possessed one of their number - but who is it, and when will they strike again?

William Shatner (Captain James Tiberius Kirk), Leonard Nimoy (First Officer Lieutenant Commander Spock), DeForest Kelley (Doctor Leonard H.
