While en route to Beta Aurigae, the <I>U.S.S. Enterprise</I> receives a distress call from the planet Camus II. When Captain Kirk and a landing party beam down they meet Doctor Arthur Coleman and Doctor Janice Lester, two survivors who claim that everyone else in their science team has been killed by celebium radiation. Years ago, while at Starfleet Academy, Kirk and Janice were in love; but Janice's inability to rise to command status due to her gender caused them to drift apart. Kirk learns that Janice is now dying from radiation poisoning; while the others attend to a dying member of the science team, Kirk is left alone with Janice, and he reminisces over past times. However, he is unaware that Janice has harboured a deep hatred of him because, unlike Kirk, she has never been able to command a starship; Janice traps Kirk inside an alien machine and swaps bodies with him - now that her personality inhabits his body she can finally become captain of her own vessel. 'Kirk' attempts to kill 'Janice', but is stopped by the return of the others. After they all transport back to the ship, Doctor McCoy takes 'Janice' to sickbay for treatment. While Kirk, trapped in Janice's body, desperately tries to convince his crew that he is really the captain, Janice takes control of the ship and diverts it to the Benecia Colony, where she plans to leave her body - and Kirk's essence - thereby dealing with all her problems…
