While in the vicinity of a black star, the U.S.S. Enterprise is thrown into a time warp and arrives in orbit around Earth in the Twentieth Century. When the personnel at Omaha Air Base detect an Unidentified Flying Object, they immediately despatch a fighter plane manned by Captain John Christopher to investigate. But when the aircraft is accidentally destroyed by the Enterprise’s tractor beam, Captain Kirk has no choice but to have the pilot beamed aboard. Unfortunately, this now means that Christopher has gained knowledge of his planet’s future, and if he returns to Earth and tells anyone of what he has seen, history will be irrevocably changed. Kirk’s concerns increase when Spock learns from ship’s records that Christopher's son will prove to play an important role in the future. The captain and Lieutenant Sulu beam down to the air base in an attempt to remove all records of the Enterprisesighting, but while Sulu is able to escape with stolen records, Kirk is captured by the Air Police. It is up to Lieutenant Commander Spock and Captain Christopher to rescue him - but will the Enterprise crew find a way to return to the Twenty-Third Century...?
