When the <I>U.S.S. Enterprise</I> receives a distress call from the planet Platonius, Captain Kirk, Lieutenant Commander Spock and Doctor McCoy beam down to the planet surface to investigate. Here they find the planet's ruler, Parmen, suffering from a badly infected leg wound; his wife Philana explains that although the Platonians are powerful psychokinetics, they have no resistance against physical injury, and a simple cut or break in their skin can be fatal. The only Platonian without this ability is a dwarf named Alexander, the court jester and slave. After McCoy treats Parmen's wound the landing party returns to the <I>Enterprise</I>, only to find that the ship's controls are frozen; Parmen has decided to convince McCoy to remain on Platonius as his physician. However, when the doctor refuses his offer, Parmen and the other members of his royal court attempt to change his mind by forcing Kirk and Spock to take part in various humiliating scenarios: Kirk is made to repeatedly slap himself across the face; he and Spock perform silly songs; Spock is made to laugh and then cry hysterically; and then Kirk is forced to act as a whinnying horse while Alexander rides on his back. McCoy realises that unless he agrees to Parmen's wishes, the degradation of his friends will soon end in their deaths...
