As the <I>Enterprise</I> arrives at the planet Deneva, Captain Kirk looks forward to seeing his only brother Sam, and his family. But then Lieutenant Uhura intercepts a transmission from a Denevan pilot who has inexplicably sent his spacecraft into the sun in order to destroy an unknown threat. Baffled, Kirk takes a landing party down to the planet surface, only to find Sam dead, and his wife in a terminal condition. However, their only son, Peter, is still alive, and he tells Kirk and the others that the planet has been infested with large, amoeboid aliens that latch onto human beings and take over their nervous system; these creatures are able to fly short distances through the air, and can control their victims by inflicting excruciating pain. Lieutenant Commander Spock is attacked by one of the creatures, but he manages to use his Vulcan mind control to overcome the pain. He persuades Kirk to allow him to return to duty, and begins working on a way to eradicate the menace - but it seems that freeing a victim from its parasite always results in their death…
