Here they discover that the scientists are all dead, frozen when their life support system was turned off; the positions of their bodies indicate that they were insane when they perished, and some apparently died by suicide. When Tormolen removes his glove he unwittingly becomes exposed to a virus, which he then takes back to aboard the Enterprise. The virus is water-borne, and perspiration enables it to spread from a single touch. Lieutenant Sulu and Lieutenant Kevin Riley attempt to stop Tormolen from killing himself, only to become infected with the disease themselves. The infection quickly spreads among the crew, causing people to behave erratically, and to act out their deepest desires: swashbuckling Sulu threatens the bridge crew using a fencing foil; Nurse Chapel admits her unrequited love for Spock; Captain Kirk becomes overly amorous towards the female members of his crew; and Spock finally experiences grief over the death of his mother. Matters soon escalate out of control when Riley declares himself captain of the Enterprise, locks himself in Engineering and then shuts down the ship's engines. As the Enterprise is inexorably pulled towards Psi 2000 by its erratic gravity, it is up to Doctor McCoy to find an antidote for the virus before the ship and her crew perish in the imminent destruction of the planet...

William Shatner (Captain James Tiberius Kirk), Leonard Nimoy (First Officer Lieutenant Commander Spock), DeForest Kelley (Doctor Leonard H.
