When an unidentified spaceship flies into an asteroid belt, the Enterprise follows it in and rescues the vessel and its crew before they can be destroyed. Beamed aboard are an overbearing and over-opinionated tradesman named Harry Mudd, along with three beautiful women: Ruth Bonaventure, Eve McHuron and Magda Kovacs. Mudd tells Captain Kirk that he is taking the three gorgeous girls to the planet Ophiuchus VI, to marry settlers living there. But after Mudd and his 'cargo' leave in their ship, Kirk learns from computer records that the trader had been charged with a number of infractions of the law. He orders the Enterprise to give chase, but when the vessel catches up with the trader, the Starfleet ship's engines have completely burned out the lithium crystals that give them their power. Kirk takes the Enterprise to the nearest lithium mining planet to replenish their supplies. They soon arrive at Rigel XII, a lonely world inhabited by only three miners. Mudd contacts the head miner, Ben Childress, and strikes a deal with him, promising to deliver the three beauties to the lonely miners in exchange for a quantity of lithium crystals - and some assistance in escaping from Captain Kirk. Meanwhile, Eve has fallen in love with Kirk, and attempts to escape her forthcoming marriage, but Childress finds her and brings her back to the mining base. However, all is not what it seems, as the three attractive women conceal a secret hidden behind their beautiful facades...
