Assistant Federation Commissioner Nancy Hedford contracts the fatal Sakuro's disease while attempting to end a war currently being waged on the planet Epsilon Canaris III. Captain Kirk and Lieutenant Commander Spock take the shuttlecraft <I>Galileo</I> to bring the Commissioner back to the <I>Enterprise</I> for treatment, but the shuttlecraft is suddenly pulled off-course by a strange, cloud-like life-form. The entity takes the vessel and its occupants to Gamma Canaris N, where they are greeted by Zefram Cochrane, the scientist who discovered warp drive over one-hundred years before. Strangely, Cochrane still appears young and handsome, despite his advanced age; he explains to Kirk and the others that the 'Companion' - his name for the nebulous entity - is responsible for his youth and vitality, and has brought them to the planet to provide him with human companionship. When Companion prevents Spock from repairing the disabled shuttlecraft, Kirk becomes concerned that Nancy will die before she can reach the <I>Enterprise</I>; using a translating device built by Spock, the captain communicates with the entity, and is surprised to learn that it has a female personality - and is in love with Cochrane. However, the scientist does not reciprocate the cloud-creature's feelings, and has instead fallen in love with Nancy. He agrees to help destroy the Companion so that they can save Nancy's life, but when the attempt fails, the cloud creature reacts in a most surprising way...
