Here Kirk and his officers discover that Pike has been severely crippled by delta rays, and is now confined to a moving chair operated by brain waves, and can only communicate by using a light to signal the answers "yes" or "no". Without his captain's knowledge, Lieutenant Commander Spock abducts Pike and brings him aboard the Enterprise. When Kirk and Commodore Mendez return to the ship, they find that the Vulcan First Officer has locked the controls on a course set for the planet Talos IV; visiting this world is punishable by death, and so Kirk and Mendez have no choice but to convene a court-martial against Spock. During the proceedings, the members of the court look on as a screen shows the events that occurred when Pike was captain of theEnterprise, during the time of his encounter with the Talosians: after receiving a distress signal from the planet Talos IV, Captain Pike and a landing party beam down to the planet surface to investigate. They meet a group of survivors from a missing scientific expedition, and Pike soon becomes enamoured of a beautiful girl named Vina. However, he and his officers are unaware that, except for Vina, the survivors are merely illusions created by the Talosians, alien beings who live in a secret base hidden beneath the planet surface; Vina leads Pike into a trap, and he is captured by the aliens. However, before the playback of events can continue, Lieutenant Uhura reports that the Enterprise has been receiving transmissions from Talos IV - and Kirk is suddenly relieved from duty by order of the Starfleet Command Consul&

William Shatner (Captain James Tiberius Kirk), Leonard Nimoy (First Officer Lieutenant Commander Spock), DeForest Kelley (Doctor Leonard H.
