Intrepid, a starship entirely crewed by Vulcans; Lieutenant Commander Spock then experiences a flash of pain and realises he has just felt their deaths. Starfleet Command informs Captain Kirk that the Intrepid was investigating the loss of contact with the solar system Gamma 7A; the Enterprise is ordered to Sector 39J to discover what has happened, but when the starship arrives its sensors indicate that the entire solar system and its billions of inhabitants are now all dead. The Enterprise then encounters a strange, dark area in space; Kirk orders the launch of a probe, but a high-pitched whine is immediately heard throughout the vessel, causing half the crew to be come seriously ill. Spock suggests that the noise is a form of energy, and is probably responsible for the death of the solar system s inhabitants and the crew of the Intrepid. However, when the starship moves in closer, the noise rings out once more - and then the stars seem to vanish. After a mysterious energy field starts draining their mechanical and biological energy, everyone aboard the vessels slowly begins to die. Doctor McCoy soon realises the truth - the Enterprise has become trapped inside an enormous amoeba-like creature approximately 18,000 kilometres in length. This single-celled organism feeds on energy and is about to reproduce - posing a serious threat to the entire galaxy&

William Shatner (Captain James Tiberius Kirk), Leonard Nimoy (First Officer Lieutenant Commander Spock), DeForest Kelley (Doctor Leonard H.
