Captain Kirk is sent to the planet Capella IV to negotiate a mining treaty. Beaming to the surface with Lieutenant Commander Spock and Doctor McCoy, Kirk finds the Capellan people to be a warlike race, bound by tradition. However, a Klingon agent named Kras has already arrived and has struck an agreement with a group of Capellan rebels; they kill the leader, Akaar, and then take over. Akaar's widow, Eleen, is carrying the child that will be the next leader, but due to her people's dogged belief in their customs, she is willing to forfeit her life. However, Kirk convinces her to escape; together with Spock and McCoy they flee the city and take refuge in the hills. Meanwhile, the Enterprise comes face to face with a hostile Klingon Warbird, which prevents the crew from assisting the captain and his party. Eleen goes into labour, and McCoy delivers the child. But then, while Kirk and Spock are out scouting the terrain, Eleen knocks McCoy out with a rock and returns to the city; when she informs the Capellans and Kras that the Starfleet officers and her child are now dead, the Klingon decides that the time is right to seize control, and he orders an attack on the Capellans...
