Captain Kirk and several members of a landing party prepare to return to the <I>Enterprise</I> after a visit to the planet Alpha 177. When Technician Fisher beams up from the planet surface with some magnetic ore on his clothing, Chief Engineer Scott notices a transporter malfunction; after checking the transporter and finding nothing wrong, he beams Kirk aboard. The captain successfully arrives, but after he has left with his officers, a second Kirk materialises on the transporter pad... The landing party attempt to send a small dog-like animal indigenous to Alpha 177 up to the ship, but the creature splits into two versions: one tame and docile, the other vicious and snarling. The same thing has happened to the captain: one Kirk is good, while the other is evil. The villainous version of the captain causes confusion by giving his senior officers strange orders; he then proceeds to commit violent acts, and even attempts to assault Yeoman Janice Rand. When Scotty finds that the transporter continues to split objects in two, the remaining members of the landing party are forced to stay on the planet surface, even though this means certain death from exposure to the freezing drop in temperature that the approaching nightfall will bring. While the 'good' Kirk weakens, his mind losing focus and his ability to lead failing, the 'evil' Kirk starts to die - both halves need each other in order to survive. Unless Scotty can repair the transporter in time, both the landing party and the captains will die...
