Enterprise receives a distress call from a human colony on a nearby planet, Captain Kirk and a landing party beam down to investigate. The bridge crew suddenly detect a damaged Klingon ship also in orbit; meanwhile, on the surface, Kirk and the landing party are confronted by a group of Klingons and their commander, Kang. The enraged Kang accuses Kirk of having caused the damage to his ship, and claims the Enterprise as a prize; Kirk is forced to beam Kang and his crew aboard the Enterprise, but he manages get a warning to Lieutenant Commander Spock, and the Klingons are quickly taken prisoner. While questioning Kang, Kirk discovers that both ships have received the same, false, distress call. However, both crews are unaware that a malevolent, glowing entity has beamed aboard with them from the planet surface; the creature infiltrates the Enterprise computer and then sends the ship hurtling towards the galactic rim. The entity feeds off aggressive behaviour, and it proceeds to heighten both crews' sense of paranoia, goading them into fighting each other. Soon violent clashes between the Klingons and the Starfleet officers break out inside the ship, and both sides find their phasers inexplicably transformed into swords. As the Enterprise erupts into a battle zone, can Kirk call a truce and find a way to defeat the alien manipulator?

William Shatner (Captain James Tiberius Kirk), Leonard Nimoy (First Officer Lieutenant Commander Spock), DeForest Kelley (Doctor Leonard H.
