The U.S.S. Enterprise makes a rendezvous with the S.S. Antares, and takes aboard young Charles Evans, sole survivor of a crashed colonising expedition to the planet Thasus. As the ships depart, Captain Ramart of the Antares attempts to contact Kirk concerning Charlie, but his vessel is inexplicably destroyed. Curiously, Charlie fails to show any grief at the death of the people who had looked after him the last few months, seemingly more concerned that his new ‘family’ like him. Life for a teenager aboard the Enterprise proves awkward and difficult, especially with an isolated upbringing such as Charlie’s; soon strange events occur whenever the boy is angered: using his psionic powers, Charlie makes Yeoman Rand disappear after she rebuffs his amorous advances; causes Lieutenant Commander Spock's legs to break when the Vulcan attempts to discipline him; and brings retribution to anyone who appears to laugh at him. Charlie then demands that Kirk take him to the nearest inhabited planet, but when the captain refuses, fearing that the boy’s uncontrolled temper and dangerous powers will create mayhem, the boy takes control of the Enterprise and uses his psionic powers to get his own way…
