When Lieutenant Commander Spock begins to exhibit uncharacteristicly erratic behavior, Captain Kirk asks Doctor McCoy to give him a medical examination. The doctor diagnoses a potentially lethal internal distress, but Spock reveals that he is experiencing ‘pon farr’, explaining that Vulcans are married as children, with the understanding that they will fulfill their commitment when they reach adulthood. It transpires that if he does not immediately proceed to Vulcan and mate with his bride, T'Pring, then Spock will die. Valuing the life of his friend above his career, Kirk disobeys a direct order from Starfleet and proceeds at maximum speed to Vulcan. Arriving at the planet, Kirk and McCoy are invited as Spock's friends to witness the marriage ritual, known as the ‘Koon-ut-kal-if-fee’; conducting this auspicious ceremony is T'Pau, a highly respected member of the Vulcan high-counsel. However, T'Pring complicates matters by announcing that she would rather marry Stonn, a full Vulcan, rather than the half Vulcan-half human Spock. She then evokes her right to have Spock fight for her, and chooses Kirk as her champion. Fearing that his best friend is too weak to fight, Kirk agrees to face him in combat - and only then does he learn that this is a fight to the death…
