Enterprise</I> is assigned to transport the legendary negotiator Admiral Mark Jameson to the planet to undertake talks for their release. Jameson is a man in his eighties suffering from a terminal disease; however, as the journey progresses, Doctor Beverly Crusher is astonished to see the Admiral inexplicably become steadily healthier and younger. When Captain Picard questions Jameson over his rapid de-aging, the Admiral confesses that he took an enormous dose of an experimental alien drug to treat his illness; he also reveals that Karnas' insistence that he act as a mediator is not coincidental: forty-five years ago he was to have negotiated a similar hostage deal with Karnas, but instead chose to supply arms to both Karnas and his enemies, resulting in a civil war that lasted forty years.
