Enterprise discovers a Federation shuttlecraft spinning out of control, the crew are startled to discover an exact double of Captain Picard unconscious at the controls. After Doctor Pulaski confirms that the new captain is not an impostor, Counselor Troi is able to determine that the duplicate is from another time; Lieutenant Commander Data then informs them that the shuttle's on-board clock is just six hours ahead of the Enterprise's computers. Playing back the shuttle camera's footage shows the Enterprise surrounded by a whirlpool of energy; however, the future Picard is too confused to give any information about the impending danger, while a scan of their surroundings reveals nothing similar to the energy force. Picard begins to doubt himself, concerned that the actions of his future self may have doomed him and his crew to an unending cycle of torment. The energy whirlpool suddenly appears and holds the ship immobile in its grip, and when the Enterprise engines are unable to free the vessel, Picard realises that he faces a grim choice: should he take action against the energy force or not - the wrong decision could doom them all to a never-ending fate...

Patrick Stewart (Captain Jean-Luc Picard), Jonathan Frakes (Commander William Thomas Riker), LeVar Burton (Chief Engineer Lieutenant Geordi La Forge), Michael Dorn (Security Chief Lieutenant Worf), Marina Sirtis (Councelor Deanna Troi), Brent Spiner (Lieutenant Commander Data), Wil Wheaton (Wesley Crusher), Diana Muldaur (Doctor [Commander] Katherine Kate Pulaski), Colm Meaney (Transporter Chief Miles O Brien)

Directed by Joseph L.
