Star Trek The Next Generation Cast

Captain Picard is seriously wounded after being shot at close range with an energy weapon. As Doctor Crusher desperately attempts to prevent his artificial heart from malfunctioning, the captain suddenly finds himself in a white void; he is confronted by his old nemesis, Q, and learns that he is now dead, they are in the afterlife - and that Q is God. When Picard scoffs at Q’s claims, the ‘supreme being’ holds up his broken artificial heart; Picard is filled with a sense of regret, and, after some goading by Q, reluctantly admits that if given the opportunity to live his life again, he would do things differently. Picard immediately finds himself as a twenty-one-year-old ensign in Starfleet Academy, together with his two friends, Corey and Marta; after his two fellow ensigns leave, ‘Captain Q’ appears and tells him that if he succeeds in avoiding being stabbed through the heart by a Nausicaan, he will return to the present with his real heart intact - but if he fails, he will die and spend eternity with Q. Picard was injured after rigging a gambling table to help Corey; he tries to talk his friend out of gambling, but Corey ignores his advice and plays damjat, only to be beaten by a cheating Nausicaan. Corey asks Picard to help him get his revenge, but Picard refuses, and Corey storms off in anger. Picard then spends the night with Marta, but the following morning she is concerned that they have ruined their friendship. Later, the three friends share a tense drink in the bar; three Nausicaans arrive and try to provoke a fight, but Picard knocks Corey to the floor and they walk away in contempt. Corey and Marta can only see Picard’s actions as a betrayal, and declare that they are no longer friends. Q congratulates Picard for changing his destiny, and returns him to the Enterprise in the present day - however, the changes in Picard’s past now mean that he is just a lowly lieutenant, junior grade…
