Enterprise to hear him explain his invention of a metaphasic shield, a device designed to protect a shuttle and its occupants from the forces of a star's corona. Four scientists attended the demonstration: a gruff Klingon named Kurak; T'Pan, director of the Vulcan Science Academy, and her husband, Doctor Christopher; and Jo'Bril, an enigmatic Takaran. An Enterprise shuttle was fitted with the shield, and Reyga planned to pilot it into the corona of the star Vaytan; however, when Kurak insisted that someone more objective should fly the shuttle, it was decided that Jo'Bril should take over the task. T the scientist headed off in the small vessel, but was rendered unconscious by a build up of baryon particles in the shuttle cabin, and died shortly after being beamed to Sickbay. Unable to determine the cause of death, Doctor Crusher conferred with Lieutenant LaForge, Lieutenant Commander Dara and Reyga; together they surmised that, while baryon particles may have caused a problem, the death must have been due to something in the corona that Reyga failed to anticipate. The Ferengi scientist became angry at the implication, vowing to prove the validity of his work; but he wais later found dead, apparently from suicide. However, Doctor Crusher believed that Reyga had been murdered; suspecting that one of the remaining scientists was the killer, she violated the wishes of the Ferengi s family and performed and autopsy. The Ferengi government immediately lodged a formal complaint with Starfleet, and Captain Picard was forced to relieve her of duty&

Patrick Stewart (Captain Jean-Luc Picard), Jonathan Frakes (Commander William Thomas Riker), LeVar Burton (Chief Engineer Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge), Michael Dorn (Security Chief Lieutenant Worf), Gates McFadden (Doctor Beverly Crusher), Marina Sirtis (Councelor Deanna Troi), Brent Spiner (Lieutenant Commander Data), Whoopi Goldberg (Guinan), Patti Yasutake (Nurse Ogawa), Tricia O'Neil (Kurak), Peter Slutsker (Doctor Reyga), James Horan (Jo'Bril), John S.
