Here Doctor Crusher is to attend the funeral of her recently deceased grandmother, Felisa Howard; meanwhile Captain Picard and his crew assist Governor Maturin with work on the weather control units, in exchange for a tour of the colony. At the service, Beverly is intrigued when a strange, handsome young man throws a camellia, Felisa's favourite flower, into the grave. Returning to her grandmother's house, Beverly finds an old candle, which represents the enduring Howard spirit', and her grandmother's old journals; however, she is interrupted from reading them by Ned Quint, a belligerent old man who has taken care of the house for the past five years. Ned insists that she throw out the candle, claiming that it brought the Howard women nothing but bad luck, but Beverly refuses on the grounds that it has been in her family for generations. Later, on the Enterprise, Lieutenant LaForge and Lieutenant Commander Data investigate a power fluctuation in the colony's weather controls; meanwhile, in her quarters, Beverly becomes engrossed in Felisa's journals, and is surprised to learn that she had a young lover named Ronin. That night, while she sleeps, Beverly feels as though caressed by a lover s hands; hearing a man's voice, she awakes, but finds no one else in the room. The following morning, she visits Felisa's grave and again encounters Ned; he warns her that the house is haunted and tells her not to light the candle as it will summon a ghost, which he believes was responsible for Felisa's death. After he leaves, Beverly notices that her grandmother's bare grave is now covered with camellias; a violent storm then breaks out, forcing her to return to the house, but when she arrives, she is astonished to find that it too has been filled with camellias. Searching the house, she hears the man's voice once again; it identifies itself as Ronin, explaining that it is a ghost that has loved the Howard women in for eight hundred years. Ronin then tells Beverly that he loves her - and she succumbs to his passionate caresses&

Patrick Stewart (Captain Jean-Luc Picard), Jonathan Frakes (Commander William Thomas Riker), LeVar Burton (Chief Engineer Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge), Michael Dorn (Security Chief Lieutenant Worf), Gates McFadden (Doctor Beverly Crusher), Marina Sirtis (Councelor Deanna Troi), Brent Spiner (Lieutenant Commander Data), Michael Keenan (Maturin), Shay Duffin (Ned Quint), Duncan Regehr (Ronin), Ellen Albertini Dow (Felisa)

Directed by Jonathan Frakes
Produced by Ronald D.
