Enterprise is sent to provide medical aid for Doctor Ira Graves, a brilliant scientist now in the final stages of a terminal disease. Learning that the request was made against Graves' wishes by his assistant, Kareen Brianon, Lieutenant Commander Data takes an away team down to the surface of the remote planet on which Graves is living out his last days. The android soon develops a strong rapport with the doctor, and learns that his experiments have led to a breakthrough: Graves has successfully managed to transfer knowledge from a human mind into a computer. After Graves dies, Data returns to the Enterprise; however, his behaviour soon becomes erratic and out of character; when an engineering test is unable to detect any mechanical malfunctions, Counselor Troi attempts a psychological test and discovers that Data has two conflicting personalities within him. It seems that Graves was able to transfer his dying mind into Data's mechanical brain - and he now intends to place Kareen in a similar android body so that they can be together for all eternity...

Patrick Stewart (Captain Jean-Luc Picard), Jonathan Frakes (Commander William Thomas Riker), LeVar Burton (Chief Engineer Lieutenant Geordi La Forge), Michael Dorn (Security Chief Lieutenant Worf), Marina Sirtis (Councelor Deanna Troi), Brent Spiner (Lieutenant Commander Data), Wil Wheaton (Wesley Crusher), Diana Muldaur (Doctor [Commander] Katherine Kate Pulaski), W.
