While travelling through an uncharted solar system, the <I>U.S.S Enterprise</I> discovers a battered section of metal plating bearing the insignia of Earth's United States Air Force. Commander Riker, Lieutenant Commander Data and Lieutenant Worf beam down to the surface of the nearest planet, only to discover a completely back void, empty apart from a revolving door. Stepping through they then find themselves inside the casino of the Hotel Royale, full of employees and patrons frozen into immobility. When communication with the ship is suddenly cut off, Riker and the others discover that they are unable to leave the hotel, as the revolving door continually leads back into the lobby. Bizarrely, the staff and patrons then come to life and begin to enact the drama of a bellboy who must fight an evil gambler for the woman he loves; then, in one of the rooms, the three officers discover the ancient body of an American Air Force officer, and a novel entitled ‘The Hotel Royale'...
