Lieutenant Worf’s recent experience in the Carraya sector has resulted in a crisis of faith, and he begins neglecting his duties. When he fails to report for duty, Commander Riker investigates and finds the Klingon in his quarters attempting to summon a vision of Kahless, the greatest Klingon warrior of all; Worf tells Riker that centuries ago Kahless united his people, and promised to return one day and lead them once more. Captain Picard grants Worf some leave, and it is not long before the Klingon arrives of the planet Boreth, where the ‘Followers of Kahless’ await the return of their leader. However, after ten unproductive days, Worf becomes restless and considers leaving, and only decides to stay after a lecture on open-mindedness from Koroth, head of the Clerics. Worf attempts the ritual again in the ceremonial lava caves - and looks on in amazement at the great warrior himself appears out of the smoke and announces that he has returned… The Followers are stunned, but Koroth doubts that it is the real legend - until Kahless tells them the story of how the Klingon bat'leth sword was forged, a secret known only to the High Clerics so that they could verify the authenticity of anyone claiming to be Kahless. This proof is enough for the assembled Klingons, who are overjoyed at the return of their leader - all but Worf, who is suspicious that Kahless is not all that he claims to be…
