Enterprise</I> when the vessel detects a distress call. As the quartet make haste to reach the ship, their shuttlecraft is suddenly enveloped by a strange energy field; Chief O'Brien manages to transport them across to the ship, but they materialise on the transporter pad as twelve-year-olds. Although their bodies have been rejuvenated, their minds are still normal; but while the young Guinan enjoys her new situation, Ro frets, Keiko experiences difficulties with her marriage and her baby, and Picard finds that his crew is unable to take him seriously, forcing him to hand over command to Riker. Lieutenant LaForge determines that the captain and the others were affected by a molecular reversion field, and hypothesises that the transporter can be used to reverse the effect. The <I>Enterprise</I> arrives at the source of the distress call, Ligo VII, but is immediately attacked by two Klingon warbirds; the <I>Enterprise</I> s power systems are quickly disabled, and the vessel is boarded by Ferengi. Their leader, Lurin, informs Riker that he has declared the <I>Enterprise</I> to be a loss, and that Ferengi law permits him to begin salvage operations - and if the crew refuses to comply, they will be executed.
