Enterprise arrives at the planet Tyra 7A, where Lieutenant LaForge is given the task of inspecting the completion of a new mining technique known as a particle fountain; he is to work alongside Doctor Farallon, the scientist developing the new technology. But the constraints of the tests quickly prove overwhelming; a problem suddenly occurs in the power grid, threatening an imminent explosion; with time running out, Farallon proposes using an Exocomp - a small robotic device she has created - and the device quickly averts the disaster by restoring the power grid to its normal state. With the situation over, Farallon explains that the Exocomp is able to use transporter technology to replicate tools, and can solve problems for itself. After seeing the device, Captain Picard allows Farallon and Lieutenant Commander Data to repair the mining system using the Exocomp; initially the device works perfectly, but it then becomes unresponsive to commands, leaving a plasma conduit and then refusing to return - just before an explosion occurs in the conduit. After attributing the device s actions to a malfunction, Farallon then continues with her work using two other Exocomps. But Lieutenant Data is unconvinced, and he decides to take the faulty item back to his quarters. After two hours he finds that the little machine has repaired itself; Data realises that this can mean only one thing: the Exocomps are alive&

Patrick Stewart (Captain Jean-Luc Picard), Jonathan Frakes (Commander William Thomas Riker), LeVar Burton (Chief Engineer Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge), Michael Dorn (Security Chief Lieutenant Worf), Gates McFadden (Doctor Beverly Crusher), Marina Sirtis (Councelor Deanna Troi), Brent Spiner (Lieutenant Commander Data), Ellen Bry (Doctor Farallon), J.
