The crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise is surveying the intense geological activity in the Selcundi Drema planetary system. Lieutenant Commander Data informs Captain Picard that he has become ‘pen pals’ with a young girl named Sarjenka, who lives on Drema IV; the android is worried because his friend's world faces imminent destruction due to the earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. However, Picard's concern is due to the fact that Data has contravened the Federation Prime Directive, a strict code of non-interference. Meanwhile, Commander Riker decides to help further Ensign Wesley's Starfleet education by placing him in charge of a team carrying out mineral surveys to determine the cause of the geological stress; but Wesley's lack of confidence leads him to allow the older crew members under his command to take over...
