Enterprise makes its way through the Omega Sagitta system, Captain Picard and his crew encounter a disabled cargo ship captained by a charismatic rogue named Okona. After beaming aboard the Enterprise Okona quickly proves popular with its crew; but while the women fall for his good looks and charm, Lieutenant Commander Data is unable to understand Okona's jokes; puzzled and intrigued, the android turns first to Guinan the bartender for help, and then visits the holodeck to take lessons in humour. Then two interplanetary ships appear and their captains demand Okona's surrender; Debin accuses Okona of getting his daughter, Yanar, pregnant, while Kushell and his son Benzan believe that he has stolen the Jewel of Thesia, his nation's valuable prize. Captain Picard realises that if he hands Okona over to either Debin or Kushell he will cause a war between their respective homelands - should he harbour an apparent criminal..?

Patrick Stewart (Captain Jean-Luc Picard), Jonathan Frakes (Commander William Thomas Riker), LeVar Burton (Chief Engineer Lieutenant Geordi La Forge), Michael Dorn (Security Chief Lieutenant Worf), Marina Sirtis (Councelor Deanna Troi), Brent Spiner (Lieutenant Commander Data), Wil Wheaton (Wesley Crusher), Whoopi Goldberg (Guinan), Diana Muldaur (Katherine Kate Pulaski), William O.
