Captain Picard allows the <I>U.S.S. Enterprise</I> to assist a critically-damaged Romulan science vessel, sending an away team across to aid the crew. However, when Lieutenant LaForge and Ensign Ro beam back with some damaged equipment the transporter goes wrong, and they fail to rematerialise aboard the <I>Enterprise</I>; sensors are unable to locate them, forcing Picard and his crew to accept that their comrades are dead. With assistance from Commander Riker, Lieutenant Commander Data and Lieutenant Worf, the Romulans save their ship by ejecting its engine core, but they still require the <I>Enterprise</I> to provide power for repair work. Meanwhile, Ro comes to in a corridor aboard the <I>Enterprise</I>; oddly, no one seems to notice her, and when she arrives in Sickbay she is shocked to hear Picard and Doctor Crusher discussing death certificates for herself and LaForge. Neither is able to see or hear Ro - and then Picard walks right through her. Ro is convinced that she must be dead. She soon encounters LaForge, also experiencing the same situation, and is overjoyed when they find that they can see, hear and touch each other. LaForge refuses to believe that they are both spirits, and sets about trying to find a solution to their condition; they overhear Data surmising that that their 'death's may be related to the Romulan ship, and decide to follow him and Worf across to the Romulan vessel. When Data asks the Romulans for permission to scan their engine room, the crew act suspiciously; LaForge and Ro soon learn that the Romulans are testing a new cloaking device, which conceals things by dematerialising them - meaning that they are not dead, but <I>cloaked</I>. Somehow they must find a way to restore themselves to their normal state - but are they the only two cloaked aboard the Romulan ship..?
