The U.S.S. Enterprise crew is assigned the mission of transporting two warring races to the conference planet of Parliament. While en route, the ship passes through a strange cloud comprised of complex energy patterns; soon after, Lieutenant Worf and Doctor Crusher exhibit signs of odd behaviour, while the ship malfunctions and then inexplicably repairs itself. When Assistant Chief Engineer Singh investigates the cause of the mechanical breakdowns he is mysteriously killed. As Security Chief Tasha Yar begins an investigation into Singh’s death, Counselor Troi places Worf and Doctor Crusher under hypnosis and learns that something invaded their minds and bodies. But then Captain Picard begins acting out of character; he orders the crew to ignore their mission to Parliament, and instead instructs them to turn around and return to the cloud…
