Enterprise explores the Mare Oscurum, an uncharted dark matter nebula, Ensign Jenna D'Sora breaks-up with her boyfriend; she soon finds herself becoming attracted to one of her good friends: Lieutenant Commander Data. When a casual conversation with her ends in a passionate kiss, Data becomes confused, and swiftly seeks advice from his friends. But Guinan, Lieutenant Geordi LaForge, Counselor Troi, Lieutenant Worf and Commander Riker all have different ideas on handling romance, so the android decides to create a new program that will help him through the intricacies of love. But Data s logic does not help his new relationship: he picks a fight with Jenna because his study of interpersonal dynamics suggests that conflict often strengthens the bond between two people. The Enterprise heads for a nearby planet to ascertain the nebula s effects on life in the region; but as the ship moves through the area, everyday objects throughout the vessel inexplicably fall to the floor. Arriving at the co-ordinates of the planet, Captain Picard and his crew are confused to find that it is not there, and then look on in amazement as it suddenly reappears. Data discovers that the nebula is causing small gaps to occur in the very fabric of the surrounding space - gaps that are now causing parts of the U.S.S.
