Enterprise detects a signal of unknown origin emanating from a small moon; Commander Riker, Lieutenant Worf and Doctor Crusher beam down to investigate and find the wreckage of a small spacecraft, and the sole survivor of its crew: an injured, adolescent Borg. Despite Captain Picard's initial reticence to help, he is persuaded by Doctor Crusher to beam the cybernetically-enhanced alien aboard the ship; the doctor then disconnects the Borg's command centre, preventing him from communicating with the rest of the Borg Collective. When Beverly discovers that her patient's brain implants have been damaged, she asks the captain if Lieutenant LaForge could construct new ones for him; Picard still harbours hostile feelings against the Borg, whose race once kidnapped him and converted him into one of their own, and he sees this as an opportunity to alter the command structure of the Borg's brain and then use it to destroy the entire Collective through their interconnected network. Although Beverly is shocked, the rest of the crew agrees with their Captain's choice of action against an enemy of the Federation. But as Beverly reluctantly assists LaForge with working on reprogramming the Borg, they soon learn that this creature is innocent and apparently harmless; after they decide to name him Hugh, LaForge begins having second thoughts about using him to destroy his race. Meanwhile, Picard and Commander Riker discover that a Borg rescue vessel is now heading towards the Enterprise on an intercept course...

Patrick Stewart (Captain Jean-Luc Picard), Jonathan Frakes (Commander William Thomas Riker), LeVar Burton (Chief Engineer Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge), Michael Dorn (Security Chief Lieutenant Worf), Gates McFadden (Doctor Beverly Crusher), Marina Sirtis (Councelor Deanna Troi), Brent Spiner (Lieutenant Commander Data), Whoopi Goldberg (Guinan), Jonathan Del Arco (Hugh Borg)

Directed by Robert Lederman
Co-Produced by Joe Menosky, Ronald D.
