Enterprise in order to mediate a difficult dispute in the Peliar system. Arriving at Peliar, Commander Riker and Odan leave in a shuttlecraft for a meeting with representatives from the Alpha and Beta moons. However, they soon come under fire from a spaceship; Odan is critically injured, forcing Riker to return to safety of the Enterprise. Here, Beverly discovers what appears to be a parasite inhabiting Odan's body, but as she prepares to remove the creature Odan reveals that he is the parasite, while the humanoid body is merely a host. Beverly is shocked at this revelation, and tries to come to terms with the fact that she is actually in love with a slug-like alien. The Trill are contacted so that a new body can be sent for Odan to inhabit; meanwhile, Riker, realising that the volatile situation in the Peliar system could be jeopardised by a delay, volunteers to serve as temporary host to Odan, allowing the mediator to complete his mission. The operation is successful, but only serves to push Odan and Beverly apart, as the doctor finds herself unable to see past her crewmate to her lover within...

Patrick Stewart (Captain Jean-Luc Picard), Jonathan Frakes (Commander William Thomas Riker), LeVar Burton (Chief Engineer Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge), Michael Dorn (Security Chief Lieutenant Worf), Gates McFadden (Doctor Beverly Crusher), Marina Sirtis (Councelor Deanna Troi), Brent Spiner (Lieutenant Commander Data), Barbara Tarbuck (Governor Leka Trion), Nicole Orth-Pallavicini (Kareel), William Newman (Kalin Trose), Patti Yasutake (Nurse Ogawa), Robert Harper (Lathal), Franc Luz (Odan)

Directed by Marvin V.
