Enterprise searches the Black Cluster, a group of collapsed protostars with an extremely strong and erratic gravitational pull, for the missing research vessel Vico. When the ship is discovered adrift and heavily damaged, Commander Riker and Lieutenant Commander Data beam across to investigate and find a small boy trapped amongst the wreckage. They beam the child, Timothy, back to Sickbay for treatment, where he quickly becomes drawn to Data. The boy tells his rescuers that the Vico was attacked by an alien ship whose crew boarded the vessel and killed everyone but him; however, Lieutenant LaForge's research determines that this was not the case - meaning that Timothy is lying. Captain Picard becomes worried by this information, and instructs Counselor Troi and Data to spend more time with the boy in the hope that he will reveal what really happened on the ship. Timothy grows increasingly interested in his new android friend, and is very taken with his exceptional mental and physical capacities; it is not long before the boy begins talking and behaving just like Data, and adopts a new identity as an 'android'...

Patrick Stewart (Captain Jean-Luc Picard), Jonathan Frakes (Commander William Thomas Riker), LeVar Burton (Chief Engineer Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge), Michael Dorn (Security Chief Lieutenant Worf), Gates McFadden (Doctor Beverly Crusher), Marina Sirtis (Councelor Deanna Troi), Brent Spiner (Lieutenant Commander Data), Joshua Harris (Timothy), Harley Venton (Transporter Chief), Sheila Franklin (Ensign Felton), Steven Einspahr (Teacher)

Directed by Patrick Stewart
Co-Produced by Joe Menosky, Ronald D.
