Enterprise is visited by Doctor Paul Stubbs, an renowned scientist who wishes to study the explosion of a star in the Kavis Alpha Sector, an event that only occurs once every one-hundred-and-ninety-six years. However, just as preparations are being made to launch Stubbs' research unit, the Enterprise is pulled into the path of the stellar matter and then the ship s computers fail to respond; strangely, when control is eventually restored, the computer gives no indication of a malfunction. Concerned that the main computer may be breaking down, Captain Picard informs Stubbs that his project may have to be abandoned, but the scientist strongly insists that his work continue, unwilling to miss the once-in-a-lifetime stellar event. Meanwhile, Wesley confides to his mother, the newly-returned Doctor Beverly Crusher, that one of his experiments may have caused the Enterprise computer malfunction: he allowed two nanites to enter living cells to see how they interact, but the minute robots quickly evolved and became sentient; now replicating at a rapid rate, they have taken over the main computer and begun shutting down systems such as power, communications - and life support. The captain refuses to destroy the emergent civilisation, but Stubbs, fearing that his experiment will be jeopardised, attempts to kill the nanites - the creatures retaliate by attacking the scientist and rendering the ship powerless, at the mercy of the imminent stellar explosion...

Patrick Stewart (Captain Jean-Luc Picard), Jonathan Frakes (Commander William Thomas Riker), LeVar Burton (Chief Engineer Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge), Michael Dorn (Security Chief Lieutenant Worf), Gates McFadden (Doctor Beverly Crusher), Marina Sirtis (Councelor Deanna Troi), Brent Spiner (Lieutenant Commander Data), Wil Wheaton (Ensign Wesley Crusher), Whoopi Goldberg (Guinan), Ken Jenkins (Doctor Paul Stubbs), Mary McCusker (Nurse), Randal Patrick (Crewman #1), Scott Grimes (Eric), Amy O'Neill (Annette)

Directed by Winrich Kolbe
Co-Produced by Hans Beimler and Richard Manning
Executive Producers Rick Berman and Gene Roddenberry

TX:
25th September, 1989

Notes:
*Featuring Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Commander William Thomas Riker, Chief Engineer Lieutenant Geordi La Forge, Security Chief Lieutenant Worf, Doctor Beverly Crusher, Councelor Deanna Troi, Lieutenant Commander Data, Ensign Wesley Crusher and Guinan
