Later, while surveying for new colony sites, the U.S.S. Enterprise suddenly takes itself into warp and locks out all propulsion access; in an effort to regain control, Picard orders an emergency core shutdown, but before this can be carried out, the vessel takes itself out of warp. The crew are baffled, until they discover that a theta-flux distortion was building up on the ship - if it had not gone into warp when it did, it would have been destroyed less than two seconds later. Somehow, the Enterprise decided to protect itself& Lieutenant LaForge and Lieutenant Commander Data mount an investigation, and soon discover that a complex network of nodes and circuitry is forming at several key points around the ship; but when LaForge tries to examine one of them, it uses a force field to defend itself. Discovering that the nodes converge in the Holodeck, Commander Riker, Lieutenant Worf and Data investigate, only to find themselves aboard the Orient Express, together with characters from other programmes, including knights in armour and a gang of mobsters. Data tries to deactivate the Holodeck, but is stopped by the conductor, who demands to see their tickets; attempts to depolarise the power grid are prevented by the other passengers, and when the engineer arrives and tries to get the three officers to help, he is shot in the back by a gangster. The conductor then changes the train's direction and forces Riker, Data and Worf to leave - and at the same time, the Enterprise goes back into warp. Data realises that the ship is somehow forming its own intelligence - and Captain Picard realises that wherever it is heading for, they have no choice but to go along for the ride&

Stewart (Captain Jean-Luc Picard), Jonathan Frakes (Commander William Thomas Riker), LeVar Burton (Chief Engineer Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge), Michael Dorn (Security Chief Lieutenant Worf), Gates McFadden (Doctor Beverly Crusher), Marina Sirtis (Councelor Deanna Troi), Brent Spiner (Lieutenant Commander Data), David Huddleston (Conductor), Vinny Argiro (Hitman), Thomas Kopache (Engineer), Arlee Reed (Hayseed)

Directed by Cliff Bole
Produced by Ronald D.
