Enterprise arrives three days ahead of schedule for its rendezvous with the U.S.S. Victory, Captain Picard and his crew take the opportunity to take some much needed downtime. Knowing that Lieutenant Commander Data is a Sherlock Holmes aficionado, his friend Lieutenant Geordi LaForge arranges for a visit to the holodeck, to take part in one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's mysteries in Victorian London; however, Geordi, in the role of Doctor Watson to Data's Holmes, is quickly disappointed when the android, having memorised all the Sherlock Holmes stories, promptly solves the crime in a matter of seconds. After Doctor Kate Pulaski overhears Geordi attempting to explain the difference between deduction and memorisation to his friend, she challenges Data to solve a real crime; Geordi instructs the ship's computer to give Data an original mystery and an opponent that could actually defeat him. The three officers re-enter the holodeck, but the Doctor is then kidnapped by Holmes' nemesis, the notorious Professor Moriarty; it is not long before the formidable villain manages to seize control of the holodeck computer and then demands to leave the holodeck to become a real person...

Patrick Stewart (Captain Jean-Luc Picard), Jonathan Frakes (Commander William Thomas Riker), LeVar Burton (Chief Engineer Lieutenant Geordi La Forge), Michael Dorn (Security Chief Lieutenant Worf), Marina Sirtis (Councelor Deanna Troi), Brent Spiner (Lieutenant Commander Data), Wil Wheaton (Wesley Crusher), Diana Muldaur (Doctor [Commander] Katherine Kate Pulaski), Daniel Davis (Moriarty), Alan Shearman (Lestrade), Biff Manard (Ruffian), Diz White (Prostitute), Anne Elizabeth Ramsay (Assistant Engineer Clancy), Richard Merson (Pie Man)

Directed by Rob Bowman
Produced by Burton Armus, John Mason and Mike Gray
Executive Producer Gene Roddenberry

TX:
5th December, 1988

Notes:
*Featuring Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Commander William Thomas Riker, Chief Engineer Lieutenant Geordi La Forge, Security Chief Lieutenant Worf, Councelor Deanna Troi, Lieutenant Commander Data, Doctor [Commander] Katherine Kate Pulaski and Wesley Crusher
