Enterprise answers an emergency transmission from a science station on the planet Ventax, Captain Picard and his crew learn that the population is in a state of terror. Picard learns from the Ventaxian leader, Jared, that he and his people are expecting a visit from a powerful and mythical figure named Ardra; it seems that a thousand years ago, Ardra came to their warn-torn world and promised the citizens a thousand years of peace and prosperity, in exchange for their enslavement once ten centuries had elapsed. Picard take an away team down to the planet surface to meet Jared, but then Ardra suddenly appears out of nowhere and announces that she has come to collect what she is due. Ardra is immediately attracted to Picard, but the captain refuses her advances, remarking that her ability to vanish and then reappear, cause earth tremors, and even transform into the Klingon devil to scare Lieutenant Worf are merely tricks that the Enterprise crew are also capable of achieving. However, when Picard instructs Lieutenant Commander Data to review the ancient scrolls that detail Ardra s contract with the Ventaxians, the android informs him that the contract is valid, and gives Ardra title to anything orbiting the planet - including the U.S.S.
