Enterprise receives a delegation from the Cairn, a species that communicates using image-orientated telepathy; Counselor Troi s mother, Lwaxana, is enlisted to help teach them how to master verbal communication, and it is not long before she attempts to start a romance between her daughter and one of the diplomats, Maques. Troi is furious, but when she confronts her overbearing mother, Lwaxana breaks down into tears; embarrassed, Maques apologises, and tells Troi that part of Lwaxana's mind is hidden and dark. When Lwaxana admonishes Commander Riker over his friendship with her daughter, Doctor Crusher is prompted into submitting her to a medical examination; she finds that the Betazoid is suffering from a lack of psilosynine, a neurotransmitter involved in telepathy, and orders her to rest. Lwaxana ignores her advice, but when she joins Troi and the Cairn delegates in the arboretum, she suddenly collapses into a coma. Learning that her mother's brain has shut down, Troi turns to Maques for help, unaware that her attempts to help her mother will unearth a dark secret from Lwaxana s past&

Patrick Stewart (Captain Jean-Luc Picard), Jonathan Frakes (Commander William Thomas Riker), LeVar Burton (Chief Engineer Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge), Michael Dorn (Security Chief Lieutenant Worf), Gates McFadden (Doctor Beverly Crusher), Marina Sirtis (Councelor Deanna Troi), Brent Spiner (Lieutenant Commander Data), Majel Barrett (Lwaxana Troi), Norman Large (Maques), Kirsten Dunst (Hedril), Amick Byram (Mr. Troi), Andreana Weiner (Kestra)

Directed by Les Landau
Produced by Ronald D.
