Enterprise is in downtime, enabling the crew to enjoy some quality time. Lieutenant Worf and his son Alexander visit a holodeck simulation of the Wild West - South Dakota in the Nineteenth Century - where they assume the roles of sheriff and deputy; Worf quickly completes the scenario, apprehending killer Eli Hollander with little effort, prompting Alexander to increase the difficulty; but Worf again manages to arrest Hollander, although this time with some assistance from Counselor Troi, who has decided to join them as a "mysterious stranger". Lieutenant LaForge works on connecting Lieutenant Commander Data s brain to the ship s computer, in order to determine if the android can be used as a back-up. Later that day, several malfunctions afflict the computer system: lines from Data's poetry replace the script in a play that Doctor Crusher is rehearsing, while on the holodeck, deputy Alexander is kidnapped by two of Eli's henchmen and taken to meet Eli's father, Frank - who looks exactly like Data. Searching for his missing son, Sheriff Worf meets Frank in the saloon; the Klingon initially believes the man to be his friend Data, until the gunslinger s behaviour convinces him otherwise. After rejecting Frank s offer to exchange Eli for Alexander, Worf instructs the computer to stop the program; the attempt fails, and Worf only just manages to escape, suffering a bullet in the arm in the process. He rejoins Troi in the sheriff s office, only to find that Eli now wears Data s face as well. Troi realises that while they cannot end the program on command, it should terminate if they can reach the end of the story; with this in mind, Worf agrees to Frank s proposal to trade Alexander for Eli for his son. However, Troi discovers that not only do Frank and Eli look like Data, they also have his android strength and abilities; since Frank cannot be trusted, it is likely that he will attempt to kill Worf in a shoot-out - a battle that Worf will almost certainly lose&

Patrick Stewart (Captain Jean-Luc Picard), Jonathan Frakes (Commander William Thomas Riker), LeVar Burton (Chief Engineer Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge), Michael Dorn (Security Chief Lieutenant Worf), Gates McFadden (Doctor Beverly Crusher), Marina Sirtis (Councelor Deanna Troi), Brent Spiner (Lieutenant Commander Data), Brian Bonsall (Alexander), John Pyper-Ferguson (Eli Hollander), Joy Garrett (Annie), Jorge Cervera, Jr. (Bandito), Majel Barrett (Computer Voice)

Directed by Patrick Stewart
Produced by Peter Lauritson
Co-Produced by Ronald D.
