The Village hosts a chess tournament, using human players to represent the pieces. Number 6 is asked to take part in the competition by Number 2; he agrees, and takes on the role of the Queen’s Pawn. However, when the Queen, Number 8, reveals to Number 6 that she will help him to escape the Village, he immediately becomes suspicious. But when the Rook is taken to hospital for conditioning, Number 6 realises that he may well be the one to trust. Together they decide to formulate an escape plan, choosing their allies by separating the pawns from the players…
