While Nick attends a Home Office review of the fixed portal in the London Underground, Sir James Lester receives a report of another dinosaur sighting at the Crystal Palace Diving Institute, where a voracious sea creature know as a Mosasaur has devoured a swimmer. But when Nick and Claudia arrive at the swimming baths the creature has vanished, and so the local police arrest the victim’s fellow swimmer, Diane Johnson, on a charge of murder; even though she is innocent, Lester refuses to arrange for the charges to be dropped until the crisis is over, fearing that news of sea monster at large would cause mass panic. Meanwhile, the Mosasaur appears in a reservoir twenty miles away, leaving behind it the regurgitated remains of the swimmer; Nick realises that although the portal’s point of origin in the Cretaceous Era is fixed, its other end is moving around in the present. After Connor determines that the reservoir’s water level falling, Nick spots the portal’s location, and, donning scuba gear, he, Stephen and a Special Forces team dive down into the murky depths to investigate. Meanwhile, Connor and Abby wade into the water to take samples, only to come under attack from the Mosasaur; when Connor sees off the sea monster with a canoe oar, the Mosasaur returns through the portal, but the rift closes behind it, inadvertently trapping one of the divers in the past. Hearing a report of a plumber killed by a monster while working in the flooded basement of a suburban home, Nick and the team race to the site; here they also discover a second body: that of the missing diver – with a handkerchied bearing the initials H.C. tied around his wrist. While Nick takes this message as proof that his wife is alive, Claudia greats the news with jealousy – and Lester gives the order for an expedition through the portal to retrieve Helen…
